Guidance on safe and supportive care in community care centres for individuals with mild mpox in camps for internally displaced persons or refugees
Overview
The objective of this document is to provide an overview of the principles and strategies for safety and effectively managing mild, uncomplicated mpox patients in community care centres established or repurposed within IDP or refugee camps and overcrowded settings (such as slums) with a high disease burden, where it is not feasible to implement home-based care.
This technical note addresses principles and strategies to consider for initiating a designated facility (referred to as a community care centre) or repurpose existing community centres (that should not be schools or learning spaces) when there is a need for safe management of persons with mild, uncomplicated mpox who do not have capacity to safely implement home-based care, such as those residing in IDP and refugee camps, slums or other crowded congregate settings. All persons with mpox should be assessed by a clinician prior to referral to a community care centre. Only individuals diagnosed as mild, uncomplicated mpox cases (according to national or local case definitions) not requiring admission to health facility or mpox treatment centre should be considered for admission to a community care centre. Please review the clinical management section for further details on criteria.
