Growing Healthier Together: raising awareness on child and youth mental health in Greece

6 June 2026

WHO/Europe, through the WHO Office on Quality of Care and Patient Safety in Athens, is hosting Growing Healthier Together, a public event to raise awareness on child and youth mental health in Greece, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Kifissia, with the support of the Ministry of Health of Greece.

Why we need to focus on child and youth mental health

Across the WHO European Region, increasing numbers of children and adolescents are experiencing mental health challenges. Recent data show that:

  • mental health conditions among 0–19-year-olds have increased by one third in the past 15 years;
  • one in 10 adolescents reports being bullied; and
  • one in 4 girls aged 15–19 lives with a mental health condition.

Overall, around 1 in 7 children and adolescents in the Region lives with a mental health condition. Behind each statistic is a young person – daughter, son, classmate or friend – who needs understanding, support and access to quality care. Mental health is an essential part of overall health and well-being, influencing young people’s ability to learn, develop and participate fully in their communities.

Strengthening the quality of mental health services and promoting mental health are key priorities under the Second European Programme of Work 2026–2030. Raising awareness, reducing stigma and supporting families and communities are essential to improving mental health and well-being for all children and adolescents. Growing Healthier Together contributes to this effort.

About the event

Now in its second year, Growing Healthier Together will bring together families, caregivers, children and adolescents with national and local stakeholders in an open and inclusive community setting. The 2026 edition will focus on integrating mental health into primary health care and strengthening community-based support.

Approximately 30 key stakeholders are expected to participate, including representatives of national and local authorities, health-care providers, civil society organizations and the education and social services sectors.

The event is open to all and free of charge. It will take place on 6 June 2026 from 11:00 to 20:00 at Kifissia Park. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore information booths hosted by participating organizations, take part in interactive and educational activities for children, adolescents and families, and engage in dialogue with professionals and community stakeholders. Awareness-raising materials and information on available mental health services and support in Greece will also be provided.
