World No Tobacco Day 2016

A call to smoke-ban legislation

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2016 was to call for national smoke-free law in China. The campaign was designed to:

  • Celebrate the success and mark the 1-year anniversary of the Beijing Smoke-free Law
  • Call for extending the same protection from second-hand smoke to the rest of the country, through adopting an 100% national smoke-free law.

Key facts

Adoption of Beijing's smoke-free law

was at the time the strongest tobacco control legislation adopted in China, and fully compliant with Article 8 of WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)

100% smoke-free China is possible

Beijing has shown that 100% smoke-free can be done in China and it is working. An 100% smoke-free law is also easier to enforce.

Win-win

Effective smoke-free laws are an economic plus: they reduce the enormous costs of tobacco use and second-hand smoke for individuals, businesses and society.
